Abstract
This study examines the siege of Jerusalem in 63 BCE through the lens of operational logistics and the challenges of deploying and operating siege engines in mountainous terrain. The research focuses on the confrontation between Roman technical superiority and the Jewish religious-based defensive system. The analysis demonstrates how military expediency overrode the respect for sacred sites during the employment of torsion engines and siege works. On the battlefield, the Romans made no distinction between the religious status and the combat role of the defenders; for the sake of a successful siege, those performing temple services were treated as armed opponents. The study pays particular attention to the exploitation of the combat restrictions arising from Jewish religious law during the Sabbath. This highlights how the Romans were able to advance their siege works without interference on days when the defenders, due to their faith-based regulations, refrained from launching counter-attacks.
