Certain Similarities and Differences Between the Technological Singularity and Weapons of Mass Destruction

doi: 10.32563/hsz.2025.2.4

Abstract

A few experts would have predicted such explosive growth of artificial intelligence (AI) now barely two years ago. This paper analyses the technologies that underpin the technology singularity, focusing on AI as a technology with effects comparable to weapons of mass destruction. Through quantitative data collection, selected relevant literature is analysed to examine the extent to which the disruptiveness of AI can be compared to WMD, whether AI can have a direct destructive impact and whether it can be regulated by the legal instruments known during the Cold War I.
