Just War Theory in the Ancient Theories of State

Abstract
The history of warfare justice thinking started in the Antiquity, in the Near East, in the Sumerian city states. City states and empires of the Ancient Near East developed several different forms of just war thinking and saw it as a mythological-religious and practical-political question. According to traditional theories, the theoretical articulation of warfare justice, just war theory appeared in the Middle Ages only. In this study I present the Ancient Greek and Roman part of the history of just war theory arguing for the claim that this history started in the Greek and Roman Antiquity.
