Abstract
Border surveillance and border traffic control executed in accordance with the uniform principles at the Schengen external borders play a significant role in providing security in the European Union and the Schengen Area. The periodic monitoring/evaluation of the Member States’ activities is required to obtain and maintain this Community objective. In case a Member State is not able to or not willing to take such measures which ensure the safety and security of the Community, it is possible to impose such sanctions which comply with the graduated approach, or, as a last resort, there is also the possibility of temporary reintroduction of border control at the Schengen internal borders of the Member State concerned.
