Abstract
One of the most spectacular accompaniments to India’s rise is the rapid development and growing presence of its navy in the Indo-Pacific region. The significance of this process is not purely military in nature, but more important is its role in the regional and wider balance of power in Asia. Nowadays, India aspires to become the leading power in the Indian Ocean, and in addition to the United States, several major countries in the region have an interest in its success. At the same time, the ambitions of the South Asian giant pose a barely veiled challenge to the interests of China and Pakistan. This paper summarizes the role of the Indian Ocean in Indian strategic thinking and then presents the key goals and achievements of its naval development. In this regard, the paper evaluates the capabilities of the Indian Navy in comparison to its potential rivals, and finally highlights the characteristics of India’s position and argues for the improbability of a naval conflict.
