The Hungarian Culture in Crossfire – Abstracts from the General Practice of Police Control of the Hungarian Institute in Paris: 1961–1963
Abstract
In 2018 Hungary and France commemorated the 55th anniversary of the elevation of the diplomatic relationship to ambassadorial level. The decision was made after a 15-year-delay because the promising improvement of the years after World War II had been replaced by stagnation and a cool aloofness parallel to the birth of the bipolar world order, while the rapprochement starting off in the mid-1950s had been broken by the suppression of the revolt of 1956. Contrary to the 1920s and 1930s, it was France who displayed more understanding toward Hungary among the Western great powers, but under the framework of the directives of NATO, the French police also harassed the Hungarian foreign representations.
