Force Development in the Arctic

doi: 10.32563/hsz.2023.3.1

Abstract

The Arctic region has received increasing international attention in recent years. Nowadays, this attention will continue to increase due to the intensifying climate change, as the melting of the ice in the northern area is unstoppable. This opens up new shipping routes that shorten the journey between Europe and Asia, both in terms of time and distance. The purpose of the study is to present the aspirations of the three most important northern states (the United States of America, the Russian Federation and Canada) through their military developments in the northern area. It is a fact that the Arctic occupies a special place in the Russian defence strategy, as industries and infrastructures with significant economic potential have been located in the region since the 1950s. The NATO member states also responded to these developments and started increasing their forces in the northern area.
