Abstract
The war in Afghanistan following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 provided another opportunity for NATO to play a significant role in improving international security beyond the borders of the North Atlantic region. ISAF soon grew into the Alliance’s largest operation and, after its completion, NATO has been still playing an active role in resolving the situation in Afghanistan for more then 17 years now.
Since the outbreak of the war, a third president has been registered in the United
States. All three presidents followed a different strategy, which also determined
NATO’s strategy.
