Abstract

The merging African sub regions form a new regional security complex in the close vicinity of Europe, while the European Union needs a working grand strategy to preserve its global interests. To determine the geographic scope of a possible EU grand strategy in Africa, the use of irregular migration patterns seems an ideal toolkit. The available statistics show which states serve as countries of origin for illegal migration towards Europe, and figures also explain how trends changed in the last decade.
