Abstract

Colombia has suffered for more than 50 years from armed conflict occurred among leftist guerrilla movements, right-wing paramilitary groups, organized crime groups, and state armed forces. The number of victims proves the severity of the civil war, as in 1958–2012 the conflict demanded an estimated 220,000 deaths, from which more than 180,000 were civilians. Moreover, nearly 25,000 missing persons were registered and 5.7 million people were forced to leave their homes. The peace-process gave a chance to Colombia to leave behind the nearly 60 years of conflict that can be the basis for economic and social modernization of the country.
