Water Conflict between Turkey, Syria and Iraq

  • Lechner Zoltán

Abstract

The study emphasises that the rapid growth of the world population and the level of consumption led to an increasingly worsening water shortage, which by now became one of the most important global challenges for humankind. The study deducts this topic through the analysis of the international tension over the water usage of two of the most important rivers of the Middle East, the Tigris and the Euphrates. The author argues that the solution of this problem, which is aggravating the relations between Turkey, Syria and Iraq for decades, is impossible without the profound scrutiny of the factors behind the international tensions over water, and the revision of the policies of the states in question.
