The U.S. Military Presence in the Indo–Pacific Region during Donald Trump’s Presidency

  • Budai Ádám

Abstract

The speeches of Donald Trump during his presidential campaign foreshadowed that the U.S. would play a lesser role as ‘global policeman’, while greater emphasis would be put on American nationalism and unilateralism. In the past two years, the many times unexpected and seemingly irrational foreign policy decisions have raised doubts in many partner countries about Washington’s commitment. From a U.S. perspective, this could be particularly dangerous in the Indo–Pacific region, where China’s growing influence is a direct strategic challenge. To address it, the U.S. must rely on its stable and enduring military presence, as well as on its partnerships. But the question still remains: Do Donald Trump and his administration have this approach as well?
