Fragile Heritage: The Situation of the Caló Language in Spain

Abstract
It is perhaps a lesser-known fact that Spain is home to the largest Roma population among the member states of the European Union. This study examines the current status of the Caló language variety spoken in Spain, focusing on its use in society and the mechanisms of language protection. The aim of the research is to explore the extent to which Caló remains present in the everyday life of Gitano communities, and what legal, language policy, or civil initiatives support its preservation and revitalisation. The analysis is based on monitoring reports regarding the implementation of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. The legal status of Caló remains unclear: it is not officially recognised as a minority language, and Spanish language policy does not provide systemic support for its continued existence.
