Abstract
The social doctrine of the Catholic Church was formulated in reflection on the industrial and social revolutions and the economic mechanisms of the 19th century. This paper presents the Catholic Church’s approach to evaluating official economic policy and the theories of Catholic theologians and economists. The study hypothesizes that Catholic economic ethics can provide a new response to periodic economic crises and environmental disasters, complementing traditional economic approaches. The paper gives a historical overview of the Catholic Church’s systematic approach to economic issues.
