Abstract

Regulating language usage is the novelty of modern times. In the antiquity, language usage was regulated by customs determined by circumstances and, in some cases, customary law. From a historic point of view it is thus evident that the active and passive knowledge of a common language has been a constitutive element of the modern state – language has become an instrument of exercising power. In this study I intend to show how the legal regulation of the use of language changed in different eras.
