AFDX, the Ethernet-based Data Network Used in Aviation

Abstract
Our research focuses on ARINC 664-P7, an advanced deterministic data transmission network
standard used in modern aviation systems, such as the latest aircraft from Airbus and Boeing.
It is based on IEEE 802.3 Ethernet technology, enhanced with specialised protocol extensions
to ensure high reliability and low latency. The system consists of three main components:
end-systems (data transmission and reception), switches (routing of data packets), and virtual
links (logical connections between end-systems). ARINC 664-P7 ensures data transmission
integrity, collision-free communication, and redundancy, supporting real-time communication
in aviation environments.
