Abstract
After Hungary’s accession to NATO in 2000 began the exercise of close air support at Szolnok in the attack helicopter battalion. Initially control of combat helicopters from the ground, attacking ground targets was executed by assigned experienced helicopter pilots. However it became apparent that the effective use of weapon systems needed highly trained, qualified forward air controllers aware of air force and ground forces procedures. Consequently in 2006 the Hungarian Forward Air Controller Unit was established at the 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base. In 2012 recognizing and supporting the efforts of Hungary a team of evaluators led by the United States Joint Staff assessed the state of the domestic capability, and the outcome was informed to the leadership of the Hungarian Defence Staff. In my study I will show the steps taken in order to reach current standards, the result of the evaluation, and to make my suggestions for further action in order to maintain the capability.
