Ongoing Developments in Mountain Wave Forecasting at the Hungarian Meteorological Service

Abstract

On the new website (http://aviation.met.hu) active since the 1st November 2016, among the model forecast outputs, a section for mountain wave gliding is published which consists now only of a wind time-height profile from the AROME model for four places in Hungary (Budapest, Kőszeg, Pécs and Pipishegy) which lie on the lee side of mountain ranges Budamts, Kőszeg-mts, Mecsek and Mátra, respectively. Our aim is the development of this section with publishing wind, vertical velocity, (equi)potential temperature, humidity/cloud fraction and Scorer-parameter timeheight and spatial crosssections. The time-height sections were to be created for more places on lee sides of mountain ranges, and the spatial crosssections along several lines in different directions from the surrounding mountain ranges, to cover the Carpathian Basin in order to increase the support of moun-tain wave gliding. Another aim in the more distant future is to forecast mountain wave turbulence.
