Diagnostics of Turbulence and Mountain Wave Generation in Aviation Forecasting at the Hungarian Meteorological Service

doi: 10.32560/rk.2019.3.283

Abstract

A research at the Unit of Aviation Meteorology, Hungarian Meteorological Service aims to extend
the website part (http://aviation.met.hu) for Wave Gliding within Model Forecasts. The first author reported the first steps of this research in a previous article. Some of the planned tasks are already completed, and the research also opened towards new directions. The Scorer-parameter is implemented in the AROME model and is available for some case studies; the next step will be to prepare implementing for operative use in the near future. The evaluation of the case studies is part of an MSc thesis. This research became connected with another, formerly independent research by the co-authors dealing with turbulence forecasting. Their research aims to improve free-atmospheric turbulence modelling in general, by development of parameterisations. One of their conclusions were that underestimation of turbulence is probably significant when trapped lee waves appear. Thus, we plan to work jointly.
