Abstract

Starting a new strategic planning period should be important to review the challenges and dilemmas of the Hungarian settlement-network development, regarding the territorial competitiveness and well-being. As challenges could be described the sub-urbanisation, the integration of the capital city into the European city-network, the lack of description on the regional role of the big cities and agglomeration areas. Hence, the new Settlement Network Development Strategy should be focusing on the functional hierarchy of the several cities of Hungary, regarding to the institutional cooperation and flexible regulatory system. The new settlement network system requires an adequate public administration system, fiscal decentralisation and a renewed regional policy.
