Abstract
This study, based on a presentation delivered at the Social and Family Policy Roundtable of the Ludovika University of Public Service in October 2025, examines the structure, challenges, and reform prospects of family policy in Switzerland. Drawing primarily on German-language academic literature and statistical databases, it provides a descriptive overview of the key features of Swiss family policy and situates them within an international context where relevant. The paper highlights the specific characteristics of family policy in a federal system, including cash benefits, parental leave arrangements, and early childhood education and care services. It also discusses future reform opportunities and the implications of ongoing sociodemographic changes. The study concludes that Switzerland operates a high-quality but relatively selective family policy system, largely based on social insurance and private contributions, which primarily benefits employed middle-class families and displays significant cantonal disparities.
