The Oeuvre of István Egyed: A Role Model for Public Lawyers

  • Torma András

Abstract

The study analyses the oeuvre of István Egyed, with special attention to the monograph entitled “Our constitution”, which was published in Budapest in 1943. The background for this paper was provided by the Memorial Conference for István Egyed organised at the National University of Public Service on 22nd June 2016. This study is the edited version of the lecture delivered at this conference. The purpose of the author is to provide a role model for contemporary public law experts demonstrating the exemplary role and significance of István Egyed. The methodology of the paper is descriptive-analytical-historical as it is about a professor whose oeuvre is less known compared to those of his peers in public law, including Móric Tomcsányi, István Eleki, Zoltán Magyary. The paper focuses on the analysis of the monograph referred to above, entitled “Our constitution”. Professor Egyed’s Hungarian patriotism and insistence on parliamentarism and the Holy Crown theory are obvious. This is especially significant considering the social-economic-political situation in Hungary in the year of the publication of the monograph (1943). Therefore, Professor Egyed’s monograph and whole oeuvre can be regarded as a role model for contemporary public law experts.
