Cartography Analytic Possibilities of Crime Analysis – The Usage of Crime Mapping in Everyday Police Work

  • Mátyás Szabolcs

Abstract

The method of crime analysis appeared in the daily work of Hungarian law enforcement agencies almost two decades later then in the rest of Western European countries. The reason for this was partly the lack of technical development, but distrust in the method also played an important role in the delay of its adaptation. Unfortunately, many people are suspicious of it even today, despite the fact that these analytic methods have been used for decades and they stand the test of time. However, it has to be mentioned that crime analysis is not a single method: it leverages a wide range of different methods. This study intends to introduce the crime mapping technique, which is a crime analytic method that is not well known in Hungary.
