doi: 10.32561/nsz.2021.1.3

Abstract

The United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions have changed significantly over decades since the first mission was launched in 1948. Members of peacekeeping operations have faced a number of challenges as they conduct their duties. The UN-led peace operations in 21st
century, and their military, police and civilian expert personnel perform their tasks in a complex security environment. They are faced with different challenges such as terrorist attacks against international missions, organised crime, hostile armed groups, war crimes and humanitarian crimes against the local civilian population, and so on. These challenges can only be addressed effectively by the United Nations if it has adequate intelligence support. Peacekeeping operations, like other
national military or law enforcement operations can only be carried out effectively, planned, organised and managed properly if the necessary information is provided for decision makers and a reliable intelligence support system is available.
