International Outlook on the Terrorism-related Security Awareness Programs

doi: 10.32561/nsz.2020.2.4

Abstract

Among the responses to the new types of terrorist attacks that emerged at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, which required enormous human and material casualties, security awareness inevitably required a new approach from national security agencies and law enforcement. An attitude that differs significantly from the current practice requires the establishment of a broad, direct relationship with society, instead of the previously narrow, deft conspiracy. Security awareness is seen as an effective tool in most democracies, which is demonstrated by its widespread use in a relatively short period of time. However, although the challenges are the same, there are differences in the approach to prevention, the type of related measures, their implementation and the toolkits and methods used. Given the threat posed by the new type of terrorism to society as a whole, this risks factor must be taken into account in the coming years, and it is worth monitoring the good practices and experiences of countries which have been executing awareness programs; our security awareness system has to be improved on the basis of these.
