Criminological and Law Enforcement Dimensions of Nightclub Fire Tragedies

Abstract

Introduction: Fire tragedies in entertainment venues are often caused by identifiable, recurring risk factors; therefore, they must be examined not only from the perspectives of fire safety and criminal law, but also from the perspectives of police science and criminology.

Objectives: This study aims to highlight that fires in entertainment venues resulting in mass casualties are not merely fire safety or criminal law issues, but social problems that must also be understood from the perspectives of law enforcement science, criminology, and private security. The research focuses on negligence, regulatory gaps, integrity risks, and the preventive role of private security.

Methodology: The study examines five internationally documented fires at entertainment venues using a qualitative, comparative case study methodology.

Results: The tragedies under investigation were not caused by isolated individual failures, but rather by an interlocking system of deficiencies in licensing, operations, oversight, and safety management.

Conclusion: This study may help us view the prevention of mass tragedies caused by fires in entertainment venues as a collective achievement in public safety. In this regard, government authorities, venue operators, and private security service providers share complementary responsibilities.
