Abstract
The relationship between geopolitics and civil protection (civil defence) is determined by
the geography, strategic resources and international security environment of countries,
as well as by political will and strategic mentality. Geopolitical analyses have a profound
influence on national civil protection strategies, which have the fundamental objective
of protecting civilians, critical infrastructure, key national assets and strategic resources.
This includes preparing for natural and man-made disasters and coordinating military
protection measures and civil protection efforts to guarantee the security of the population
and the stability of the country in the event of geopolitical tensions and conflicts. Analysing
the geopolitical situation of states is key to understanding defence strategies, particularly
with regard to the potential threats and challenges that may befall the country.
Together, these factors shape and influence the definition of geostrategic objectives, how
countries prepare for potential threats, how they plan to defend against them, and how
they work with other nations to harmonise their geostrategic objectives to achieve common
security goals. Geopolitics and civil protection are thus linked in a complex multinational
and multidisciplinary approach at the local, regional or global level, which is essential to
maintain the prosperity and security of countries in a volatile security environment.
