Terminology of Deception and Influence
Insights from Pseudo-Legal Communication
Abstract
Terminology plays a crucial role in professional and science communication by facilitating efficient and precise knowledge exchanges among experts. However, specialized language can also pose significant barriers for non-experts, limiting their ability to comprehend, engage with, and apply professional knowledge. Therefore, terminology not only serves communicative functions but also exerts control over access to knowledge, reinforcing asymmetrical relationships between experts and non-experts. In some cases, this can be exploited as a tool for deception or influence. This study discusses these issues through the case of pseudo-legal communication. It further considers the role and perspectives of terminology work in public professional communication based on the findings from research into effective science communication.
