Proposal for Rethinking Integration Theory
Reflections on the Future of the EU in Theoretical Contexts
Abstract
Integration is a highly structured, multi-layered, multi-levelled, multi-functional and multi-dimensional process. International integration is composed of global and interstate regional integrations. Distinction between global integration and globalisation is made. National-level integrations remain an important component. Further dimensions: transnational company and global city networks. The process, performance or success of integration is dependent on all of its components. All are important and are interconnected. Under international integration, nations integrate by adjusting. Open, cooperative, inclusive and competitive nations form an integral part of contemporary integration systems. Global cities play important role in both global and regional integration processes and multi-level governance, and they can be considered as prominent centres of trade, banking, fi nance, manufacturing, innovation, markets and infrastructure. The international integration is still a torso and burdened with structural crisis. Comprehensive theoretical approaches extend the analysis of crisis, and go beyond the policy and institution centred proposals.
