Applications of Multi-Body Dynamics and Coupled Simulations in the Defense Industry

doi: 10.32562/mkk.2026.1.9

Abstract

The application of Multibody Dynamics (MBD) and Flexible Multibody Dynamics (MFBD) in the defense industry enables accurate simulation of mechanical systems’ motion, loads, and interactions prior to physical prototyping. This paper reviews key areas of modern MBD-based simulations, including modelling of mechanical mechanisms, unmanned systems, tracked and wheeled vehicles, and specialized aerospace systems. Co-simulation capabilities with CFD, DEM/MPS, and real-time control (HIL/SIL) are highlighted, alongside the role of optimization and sensitivity analysis methods. The presented examples and workflow models demonstrate that integrating MBD technology into the early stages of the development chain increases reliability, reduces NVH issues, shortens development time, and makes the design process more cost-efficient.
