Connetions between Visibility Difficulties at Road Junctions and Accidents

Abstract

The Hungarian traffic has started significantly increase since 1990s which is not followed by the road network development and the number of accidents were increase as well by reason of the poor infrastructure. I would like to draw attention to the role of the visibility at road junctions in case of accidents occurrence. First the influencing factors of visibility are described, next the sight distance manuals are summarized. As a practical example a dangerous crossing is studied, where there were many accidents. The paper presents a method to investigate visibility using point cloud technology. The results of 3D measurement and investigation give complex view of visibility problems at road crossings.
