Abstract

Nowadays, the vehicle manufacturers and operators are facing strict environmental protection regulations, and growing social pressure for higher level of environmental protection. More studies point out the considerable effect the transient operation of the diesel engine has regarding emission. The researches and development in the field of locomotive engines and other high power engines are slower than in the car industry area. The aim of the actual research is to fill this gap and reveal such emission reducing methods that can be carried out without significant modifications on the diesel engine, by intervening in the power-train system. The scope of this article is to find a principle of intervening regarding emission reduction through literature research. The knowledge of plausible ways of intervening points the way of the further research, and will help to develop such a method which makes available operating eco-friendlier locomotives for the railway companies.
