The Importance of a Trauma-informed Approach in the Psychological Follow-up of Extraordinary Events

Abstract

Aim: In this article, we aim to highlight the long-term negative psychological effects and dysfunctions of extraordinary events that affect and endanger law enforcement officers. Extraordinary events are described with reduced predictability, and can manifest in psychotraumatology and crisis situations that colleagues may only encounter a few weeks or months after the extraordinary event. Crisis psychological researches have long dealt with psychopathologies such as PTSD or dissociation, and directly threatening behaviors such as suicide, which also deserve special attention from law enforcement. Our aim in this article is also to provide a comprehensive summary of possible psychopathologies resulting from traumas in order for law enforcement officers to gain an idea of ​​the possible dangers and to be able to develop adaptive coping strategies through self-monitoring and self-reflection in order to preserve their own mental health.

Methodology: Through a case report and literature review, we present the dynamics of extraordinary events and aspects of possible psychopathologies.

Value: The management of extraordinary events and the implementation of measures against them are stressful, both physically and mentally, but despite the fact that these events are poorly defined and conceptualized in the scientific thinking. The period after extraordinary events can be particularly critical in the development of certain psychopathologies, especially if the support of those involved in the extraordinary event is low. We also see that the development of pathologies arising from psychotraumas is an area that requires special attention in relation to the law enforcement offcers, to which both psychology and law enforcement should pay attention.

Conclusion: It may be necessary to conceptualize and frame extraordinary events. Partly for the sake of scientific investigation, and partly in order to develop successful prevention and intervention procedures that are specific to the mental support of law enforcement officers. Furthermore, education of the law enforcement officers may be necessary, the central elements of which should focus on direct threatening behaviors, trauma, crisis psychology and coping mechanism.
