Special Volunteer Police Force in the United Kingdom

Abstract

Aim: Analysis of the activities and composition of the Special Volunteer Police Unit, a volunteer law enforcement organisation operating in the United Kingdom, with a presentation of the relevant regulations governing its operation.

Methodology: As a Hungarian volunteer civil guard and practising law enforcement professional, the author of the study outlines the most important issues affecting the operation of the British volunteer organisation, its functioning, the regulatory elements he considers decisive, and the most important characteristics of membership, drawing parallels with the role of volunteers in Hungary.

Findings: The author analyses the significant role played by the United Kingdom's special police force in establishing and maintaining public order and safety, pointing out that the role of special police officer – as a field in which to gain experience – can be a stepping stone to becoming a professional police officer.

Value: The study aims to contribute to comprehensive scientific research and mapping of voluntary organisational activities, recognising that the topic under investigation, crime prevention, volunteer participation in maintaining public order and public safety is a constantly topical issue, and that the role of volunteers is an important and significant help to the police.
