Cruise Ships in the Crosshairs

doi: 10.32577/MR.2025.1.8

Abstract

The authors, as practising safety professionals, aim to provide a comprehensive overview of some of the safety issues and challenges facing the cruise ship industry. They wish to provide a glimpse behind the scenes of a world of luxury and shadows, little or not known to many. It will also highlight an industry that is growing at an incredible pace, with ships serving a growing and increasing number of passengers being launched every year. In order to maximise profits, cruise lines are offering a wide variety of different themes and different lengths of voyages, whether it’s a round-the-world cruise lasting several months or a few weeks in the Mediterranean. But as the number of passengers increases, so does the number of crimes on board.

In this paper, we have looked at the range of measures that can be taken to create and maintain shipping safety in an area where openness, hospitality and hospitality are fundamental principles. We look at the general characteristics of maritime shipping and the impact of terrorism and piracy on shipping safety.
