Abstract
The authors, as practising safety professionals, aim to provide a comprehensive overview of
some of the safety issues and challenges facing the cruise ship industry. To provide a glimpse
behind the scenes of a world of luxury and shadows, little or not known to many. It will also
highlight an industry that is growing at an incredible pace, with ships serving a growing
and increasing number of passengers being launched every year. And in order to maximise
profits, cruise lines are offering a wide variety of different themes and different lengths of
voyages, whether it’s a round-the-world cruise lasting several months or a few weeks in the Mediterranean. But as the number of passengers increases, so does the number of crimes and
accidents on board. In this paper, we have looked at the range of measures and regulations that can be taken to ensure and maintain safety in an area where openness and hospitality are fundamental
principles. We also look at the variety of dangers that a passenger on a cruise ship may face and what to expect during their time on board.
