Abstract

The field of law enforcement is the number one area of application of the technical achievements of 21st century biometrics. In order to create and maintain an area of ‘security, liberty and law’, an articulated aim of member states in their internal operations, it is inevitable that the identity of people moving within the borders of the European Union be established with reasonable assurance. The use of biometric identifiers allow authorities a rapid, efficient, reliable and trusted method for recognizing individuals.
