An Achievable Objective: Towards a Self-Supporting Prison Service
Abstract
This study aims to describe the current state of play regarding prison service becoming partially or fully self-supporting. The objective was enshrined in legislation in 2011, and this resulted in the launch of a central supply system. In the following years, the system underwent significant changes growing in size and improving in quality. The organisations established for the compulsory employment of prisoners – currently 12 – are working to fulfil the demands of public authorities in line with their capacity. Making the compulsory employment of prisoners comprehensive should also underpin the objectives associated with the prison service becoming self-supporting.
