Creation and Development of the Modern Asylum System in Hungary in the Period of Democratic Transformation
Abstract
This study provides a brief historical overview of the period of creating the modern Hungarian asylum system, which lasted from the end of 80s to the mid-90s. At that time Hungary joined to the 1951 Geneva Convention and created the legal order and institutional structure of asylum system that helped to manage two major refugee crises. By the reception of Romanian refugees, as well as, giving temporary protection for the refugees of the Yugoslavian war, Hungary won international acknowledgment.
