Abstract

Since the industrial revolution, along with the rapidly evolving technology, the variety and amount of toxic materials deposited in nature has significantly increased. It is well known today that these materials when introduced into the soil highly contaminate it and through animals and plants they can be dangerous to humans, as well.

One of the oldest industrial activities is mining industry, which can be accountable for heavy metal contamination. In the developing countries, one of the most important challenges currently is the remediation of the soil around mining plots together with the development of green technologies that, with optimal operation, can eliminate pollution or at least reduce it to a minimum.

Professionals not only need to consider the handling of toxic substances as a byproduct of industrial activity, but they also need to have proper plans for the elimination of harmful materials that can get into the environment in case of a disaster.
