The Critical Regions of Hungary by Railway Connectivity in the Case of Targeted Attacks of the Network
Abstract
To describe the railway network of Hungary, a weighted directed graph was used. By modelling the attack on stations and line sections based on two strategies, I identified the regions of the country that first become disconnected from the railway network on the disruption of multiple network elements. The three bridges on the river Danube and their connecting stations, Miskolc-Tiszai Station and its connecting branch line system and the three counties in the northeastern part of the country, especially Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, are resulted to be the most threatened regions. The separation of the Transdanubia region into a northern and southern part can be done by the destruction of relatively few network elements. To lower their exposure, the development of several appropriately located branch lines to a sufficient capacity is advised.
