Abstract
In Japanese society, coping with disasters plays a huge role, so the cultural embeddedness of emergency management is remarkable. The most important social aspect of disaster relief is public hazard education, which is provided by central and local governments, it includes education of children, preparation of adults, operation of a comprehensive information system, and operation of training centers. In October 2017, the authors spent a week in Japan under the MIRAI program sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where they visited the Rinkai Disaster Prevention Park which was opened in 2011. The center performs several functions during both normal times and times of disaster, present study places emphasis on the function of public education. The experience gained during the visit and the lessons learned may be relevant for Hungarian and international public hazard education and emergency management as well.
