Radiation Protection of the Firefighters

Abstract

Nowadays, due to the global use of atomic energy, i.e. the application of radioactive and nuclear materials risk of the occurrence of a radiological emergency is rising. However, these emergencies hardly ever happen, disaster management as, in fact, the first responder must be prepared for such situations, since their consequences could be seriously harmful for the environment and human health. Therefore quick and efficient firefighter intervention can be crucial meanwhile the radiation protection of the firefighters is essential.
The aim of the paper is to introduce the features of radiological emergencies in general, to show the system of response, to highlight some special issues from the point of view of the incident commander and to make recommendations to develop.
The work was created in commission of the National University of Public Service under the priority project KÖFOP-2.1.2-VEKOP-15-2016- 00001 titled „Public Service Development Establishing Good Governance” in the Concha Győző Program.
