Abstract

A huge earthquake hit Tokyo and its surroundings on 1 September 1923. One of the greatest cities in the world was destroyed by earthquake and fire, anarchy and chaos prevailed, the natural disaster has changed and rewrote the fate of the nation. This was the great Kanto earthquake. Ninety-three years ago, the earthquake devastated the capital and surrounding cities, demanding significant number of casualties. The article describes the Japanese nation's worst 20th century modern-day natural disaster, the earthquake and its effects and consequences, particularly in Tokyo and the Kanto region, the magnitude of the damage, reconstruction and the lessons learned from complex natural disaster.
