Information Transmission in Tirol Fortline

Abstract

Information is a critical resource. In order to provide newer evidence, the author presents a case study from the era of the Great War. This paper will depict the most important fortifications and the interior communication built in the Tirol front-line. Furthermore, the dramatic result of the lack of information during operations will be demonstrated. The author's specialization is the area of information management. The apparent deflection of the original scientific research field in the direction of history and technology is not a mistake. This paper highlights the fact that the question of critical information resource and its management is not a modern issue. The information management process is not the product of the emerging modern information technologies, it existed in earlier technological eras as well. Additionally, an interesting correlation could be found with comparing modern network protocol and the optical network of Austrian fortifications that served as a secondary means of communication between grim and high peaks. This coincidence may be classified as a kind of foreshadow of TCP/IP design.
