Abstract
Karl Freiherr von Birago (1792–1845) is one of the most versatile engineering officers, who had an impact not only on bridge construction, but in other professional fields as well. His design, the so-called Birago Bridge introduced into service in 1841, was so successful that numerous other nations purchased it, and it remained in service for more than 100 years. His talent is also illustrated by the respirator developed by him, his work on modernising telecommunications and his foray into the field of fortifications, too. He was a fortunate soldier, because his skills both as a soldier and as an inventor were recognised in his lifetime.
